The ESDA unit has 21 members that are trained weather
spotters by the National Weather Service. They volunteer
during severe weather to go to all over the county and watch
for changing or dangerous
weather and report back
to the Emergency Operation
Center what they observe in
order to forewarn all of those
in harms way. The Weather
spotters attend yearly
training seminars provided
by the National Weather
Service
Flora is also a certified StormReady Community. To be certified as
StormReady , the community must:
  • establish a 24-hour warning point and emergency operations
    center
  • have more than one way to receive severe weather forecast
    and warnings and to alert the public
  • create a system that monitors local weather conditions
  • promote the importance of public readiness through
    community seminars
  • develop a formal hazardous weather plan, which includes
    training severe weather spotters and holding emergency
    exercises
As of Mar. 19 2008, there are only 39 communities in the state of
